If someone may need you during a break, decide how contact will work before choosing a place to put your phone. A school call, care arrangement or medical device connection deserves a practical plan.
Agree who will contact whom.
Tell the relevant person when you will be unavailable, what genuinely needs an immediate response and whether someone else has agreed to cover. Check that the cover person has the information they need. Do not assume that silence means the arrangement is understood.
For example: "I will be away from 2 to 3. Sam has agreed to answer school calls during that hour. If collection plans change, call Sam first; I will check in when I leave." The useful parts are the time, the named person who has accepted the job and the route a caller should actually use. Adapt them to the arrangement you have, rather than promising that you will somehow notice everything.
Phone settings can separate some contacts from routine notifications, but test your actual setup. A permitted call is not useful if the phone is in a locker where you cannot hear it.
Check the venue's arrangement.
Ask about device rules, signal, where checking messages is allowed and whether staff offer an emergency contact route. Confirm the route before relying on it. A reception desk should not be assumed to provide a monitoring service.
If a device supports medical monitoring or another essential function, follow its professional and manufacturer guidance. A lifestyle suggestion to disconnect does not override that need.
Test the route you intend to rely on.
Before the break, ask the other person to make a trial call using the agreed method. Check what happens with your usual sound settings and where the phone will be kept. If a call goes to voicemail or a message arrives silently, decide how you will handle that before leaving the arrangement in place.
If you need to answer personally and cannot hear the phone in the planned setting, change the setting or the time. A nearby cafe, an ordinary walk with reception, or a shorter pause may fit today better. You can still put routine apps out of the way while keeping the agreed contact available.
Choose a shorter visit, a different setting or another time if that makes the arrangement workable. The useful break is the one you can take knowing how the important responsibilities are covered.
